I grew up in the most northwestern reaches of the continental U.S. It was very remote and filled with natural beauty. Experiencing that setting began my creative life. My earliest memories are of drawing on my bedroom walls. I come from a large family and my many siblings influenced me a great deal. My eldest sister gave me my first sketch book – one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. I obsessively filled the blank pages, escaping from reality and creating a colorful alternative world.
Childhood experience influences my creative process as an adult. My art is abstract and focuses on textured line, color, and movement. Most work is mixed media with pen, ink, watercolor, and acrylic paint. The pieces reflect a sense of place: physical settings and landscapes as well as metaphysical spaces. I don’t usually come into a piece with a prior idea. I try to let the process flow into the work, almost like a meditation. Something beautiful about abstract art is that a viewer can come to a piece and see something totally different than the next person, and this gives a kind of ownership to anyone who appreciates it.
